http://www.funtrivia.com/flashquiz/index.cfm?qid=318364

well? how many correct answers did you get? :)

haha. to tell you honestly, i got four out of ten ^__^
for a medtech student that's quite a shame, but it means i have lot to learn :)
well, to the topic then! :) endocrinology. what comes into your mind?
me? i think of hormones :) but its broader than that :))

according to a super information source for students in a hurry... yes you guessed it, wikipedia :)
here is the definition of endocrinology..

Endocrinology (from Greek ἔνδονendo, "within"; κρῑνωkrīnō, "to separate"; and -λογία-logia) is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions called hormones, the integration of developmental events such as proliferation, growth, and differentiation (including histogenesis and organogenesis) and the coordination of metabolismrespirationexcretionmovementreproduction, and sensory perception depend on chemical cues, substances synthesized and secreted by specialized cells.

in simple terms, its the study of the endocrine system and its babies, the hormones :) haha see how the internet can complicate definitions :))

what basically are hormones?

Hormones are your body's chemical messengers. They travel in your bloodstream to tissues or organs. They work slowly, over time, and affect many different processes, including
  • Growth and development
  • Metabolism - how your body gets energy from the foods you eat
  • Sexual function
  • Reproduction
  • Mood
Endocrine glands, which are special groups of cells, make hormones. The major endocrine glands are the pituitary, pineal, thymus, thyroid, adrenal glands and pancreas. In addition, men produce hormones in their testes and women produce them in their ovaries.
Hormones are powerful. It takes only a tiny amount to cause big changes in cells or even your whole body. That is why too much or too little of a certain hormone can be serious. Laboratory tests can measure the hormone levels in your blood, urine or saliva. Your health care provider may perform these tests if you have symptoms of a hormone disorder. Home pregnancy tests are similar - they test for pregnancy hormones in your urine.

well, things are clearer right? :)
these are amazing creations of God, to help in shaping our body, see how awesome he is? :)
here are pictures to feast your eyes with :)

whoaaah O__O haha. the first picture is a very graphic appearance of what a human being can be when the hormones are imbalanced. you get happy, sad, excited, grumpy, and most people even have this disorder called bipolar personality... amazing right???

the second picture is the endocrine system and its workers :)

and here is more information on endocrinology :)
Diabetes mellitus is a disorder of the endocrine system, a condition that 16 million Americans have, but many are yet undiagnosed, according to Endocrine Web. Diabetes is classified into one of two types, depending on the cause of the condition. Type 1 diabetes results from an insulin deficiency in the body; type II diabetes results from the development of insulin resistance in the body.
Disorders of the thyroid gland include goiters, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland, which in some cases must be surgically removed because the enlarged tissue pushes on the trachea and esophagus, causing breathing and swallowing difficulties.
Hyperthyroidism is the presence of too much thyroid hormone, which increases cellular metabolism throughout the body. Hypothyrodism is the lack of enough circulating thyroid hormone.
see? a lot of things can happen in our body, and that's just endocrinology... a lot, way lot can happen :)
well, see you next time and on my next post .. thanks for taking time to read this :)) hope you learned something :) stay happy :D
